Recently, you may have heard about a book being published by Amazon.com that caused a headline-sized commotion. The book in question is an unnamable book written on an unnamable subject. I'll say no more than that the book involved children.
If you heard the story, you were outraged. Your next thoughts would likely have been, "Why in the world would they publish such a title? What were they thinking?"
The very honest answer is that they were not thinking. In fact, there is not much of a "they" in that scenario. You see, that book was published by Amazon's publishing "machine."
And that's exactly what their publishing mechanism is. A machine. The machine does not care about books or content or authors. After all, it is a machine.
In some Orwellian way, you could say that this is what happens when you publish a book to a machine.
There's a reason why book publishing companies like Infinity Publishing exist. We are real people, right here in the U.S.A. who have spent years bringing quality content to light. The fiasco with Amazon is just plainly something that never would have happened with us.
Why? Because we are real people. Skilled people. Professionals. And we care about our books, and your books, too. Many of us have families and children of our own. That's perhaps the most important reason behind why we care as deeply as we do.
So when you are out there in cyberspace, don' lose sight of the fact that behind all the web sites, there are people, and there are machines. You'll be better off publishing with people. Because machines? They just don't care like we people do.
