Celebrating Restorations: Life After the World Wars When World War II ended and men returned home, younger ones hunted jobs, and older officers retired. Many couples married and began families. New cars, furniture, and other items became available, and businesses opened. Work, higher wages, and availability made it possible to buy and build homes, purchase cars, and have two suits in the closet. Vacations were possible with new places to visit. I tell my family’s story, adding that of others where possible. Kirby worked daily to make plans he made in the South Pacific a reality. Meanwhile, Americans restored countries ravaged by war. These were happy days.
