What did you want to be when you grew up? A ballerina, an astronaut? Maybe a vet or a NBA all-star. I wanted to write The Great American Novel – or at least illustrate the book cover. As a child, I was never without a book, a pen and a notebook. I would rather go to the library than the playground at recess. All of my free time was spent reading, writing or drawing. I even have had a bookworm and a painter’s palette on my charm bracelet. Now, after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in English, I’m working as an Author Advocate for Infinity Publishing.
I feel very lucky to have found Infinity Publishing. A year ago I had no idea what I wanted to do, I just knew that I loved to read and my Advertising minor gave me a solid foundation for marketing. There aren’t exactly classes on career options for English majors, so getting started toward a career path was a bit tricky. Fortunately, I found Sherrie Wilkolaski, a book marketing guru, and she led me to Infinity.
It’s funny how our childhood dreams evolve and lead us to our careers. I always thought I wanted to write books, but as it turns out, I really love helping authors make their dreams come true. There’s something immensely gratifying about helping authors spread their experiences, wisdom and stories to others. Everyone has his or her own story to tell and I want to help you tell yours.
The world of publishing is changing. Our world now demands information that can be accessed immediately, easily, and from anywhere and everywhere. It’s no longer enough to have a book published in print; it has to be in any and every format a reader may want it. It’s the Information Age and publishers must adapt to these new expectations of consumers. Infinity Publishing has done so flawlessly and with personalized service to authors that is unmatched by the competition. When I learned this, I knew I wanted to be a part of their team.
No matter the genre, whether it’s science fiction, self-help, young adult fiction, a cookbook, or a memoir, any book has the power to touch a reader’s life. Fiction can transport you to any time or place; self-help books allow you to learn to be the person you’ve always wanted to be; children’s and young adult books can inspire generations of readers; a recipe from a cook book has the power to bring together family and friends and create lasting memories; and a memoir allows you to connect on a personal level with complete strangers.
I believe in the power of the written word. I believe that books teach us about ourselves and about the world. I believe that books can change lives, open doors, and most importantly, inspire us. That’s why I am so pleased to be working for a company that helps make this possible.
I love being in a position where I get to incorporate the things I love most into my work. My childhood passions never left me; they simply evolved. My love of writing turned into blogging; I now have endless books by Infinity Publishing authors to satisfy my love of reading; and drawing developed into a knack for graphic design, photography and creating etched glassware. I may not be writing The Great American Novel, but I am helping it get published – and that’s like my childhood dream come true.
