Authors that have been in the business of publishing for the last 10 to 20+ years have some advantages over authors just entering the field. With every craft comes experience. Seasoned authors understand the value of working with the right editor, having a sharp cover design, starting marketing and publicity early, etc. First time authors should take the time to learn from these writers, absolutely. So what can younger, less experienced writers and soon to be authors teach their predecessors? Let’s find out…
Turn back the clock and think like a new author.
-
Think outside the box. New authors are eager to do whatever it takes to get their books sold, and will look for unique opportunities to market and promote their books. Leave no stone un-turned and don’t get stuck in an old-fashioned publishing rut.
-
eBooks are the future. Technically, eBooks are “now” but many authors who have had titles sitting on the shelves for years haven’t even taken the step forward to convert their books to an eBook. Go electronic or be ready to lose sales. More distribution options the better.
-
Getting social. Not one day goes by when I don’t talk with an established author who tells me they aren’t using any form of social media. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are not for everyone, but they really do make a difference when it comes to building your online platform. If you don’t know how to use the tools, take the time to learn. You can always hire a professional to do the work for you.
-
New technology. There are so many options for authors today, from online marketing book widgets, to social media, eBooks, audio books, book trailers and more. Stay abreast of what authors and publishers are using and get on board.
-
Blog. New or old, blogging is an essential marketing tool for any author. Just do it.
-
Education. Think back to when you published your first book, you were eager to learn everything you could about publishing. Today the author has access to more information about publishing and book marketing, that they can make a more educated decision.
Don’t let your past dictate your future, make it happen and take charge. Thinking like a new author will give you an added advantage when blended with your real world experience and knowledge. I believe you can teach an old author new tricks and they will come out on top.
